There are likely as many ways to alter the look of hardwood flooring as there are different types of hardwood floors. There seems to be dozens upon dozens of different finishes and lacquers that a person can apply to their flooring. And of course these choices are all painstaking and important. They can make your flooring meld perfectly with the rest of your home or create a look that is breath-taking and awe inspiring. Today I decided to take a look at one such method of altering the look of hardwood flooring, hand scraping.

Hand scraped, or distressed hardwood flooring is a unique flooring choice. Hand scraping hardwood flooring is done to intentionally give the floor an imperfect look. The hardwood flooring is gouged and nicked and basically given the look of an older floor. Doing this gives the floor a more lived in, rustic look. It’s a popular design choice in homes with old world, southwest or country decor.

Distressing hardwood flooring also makes it more durable. Furthermore, scratches and other dings will not show nearly as well. The floor is very low maintenance and is a good choice for homeowners with children or a lot of foot traffic.

Like most hardwood flooring there are many options to choose from. All the different methods for distressing wood is what makes it such an unique design choice. These techniques can range from scraping the wood with copper wire or finishing a floor so each saw mark is easily visible. You can check out some of the many distressed wood flooring options available.

Scraping wood floors seems counter intuitive to me but I really love the look.
